DAs Scheitern der von Arzten vertretenen Reform der Krankenwartung wirft die Frage auf, worauf die GrUndung von sogenannten Krankenpflegeorga nisationen in der ersten Halfte des 19.Jahrhunderts zurUckzufUhren ist und weshalb insbesondere Frauen fUr Pflegearbeit organisiert wurden. Desweiteren wird danach zu fragen sein, weshalb diese Form der Kranken pflege sich durchsetzen konnte und ob sie eine Anpassung der Pflegear beit an die Erfordernisse der modernen Medizin gewahrleistete. Die Frauenvereine der Befreiungskriege sind Ausgangspunkt fUr die Erorterung der Frage nach dem Engagement von Frauen fUr sozialpflegeri sche Arbeit (111.1.). Ais die erste Organisations form der Krankenpflege in der ersten Halfte des 19.Jahrhunderts wird anschlieBend dle katholische Ordenspflege untersucht (111.2.). 1m Konzept der Ordenspflege spielte die Gewinnung der weiblichen Arbeitskraft keine Rolle, ' obwohl hier hauptsachlich Frauen organisiert waren. Voraussetzung fUr das Verstandnis dafUr, weshalb sich dies in der ande ren Organisations form der Krankenpflege, der Diakonissenkrankenpflege, anders darstellte (111.4.), sind die Beschreibllngen von Konzepten, die im zweiten und dritten Jahrzehnt des 19.Jahrhunderts entwickelt wurden (111.3.). AbschlieBend werden einige erganzende Oberlegungen zllr sozia len Herkunft der 'Schwestern' und ihrem Verhaltnis zu den Kranken sowie zur zeitgenossischen Beurteilung der religios motivierten 'Schwesternpflege' durch Arzte angestellt (111.5.).
