Mit dem 1942 erschienenen Aufsatz Introduction to an Iconography of Medieval Architecture' nimmt Richard Krautheimer eine Vorreiterstellung im Gebiet der Architekturikonographie ein. Ausgehend von mittelalterlichen Architekturkopien beantwortet Krautheimer die Frage nach der Bedeutung von Bauart. Basierend auf den im Mittelalter mit am hufigsten kopierten Bauten und unter Bercksichtigung deren Originale, wird ein Bezug zwischen Form und Inhalt hergestellt. Um die komplexen Aspekte der hier nher betrachteten Abhandlung Krautheimers abrunden zu knnen, wird daher abschlieend ein kurzer Abriss ber architekturtheoretische Ansichten zur Epoche des Mittelalters dargelegt. Dem vorausgeschickt sei ein Einblick in den Lebensweg Richard Krautheimers.
