Im Jahre 1914 whrend des Ersten Weltkrieges, strebten die verantwortlichen Politiker, Diplomaten und Militrs einen Friedensschluss an, der die zuknftige Sicherheit Britanniens und ihres Empire' gewhrleisten sollte. Am 4. August 1914 trat Grossbritannien an der Seite seiner Bndnispartner Frankreich und Russland in den Krieg ein. Die Ziele Grobritanniens waren die Wiederherstellung Belgiens und die Zurckdrngung Deutschlands. Die Briten waren den langfristigen Zielen ihrer Alliierten gegenber genauso misstrauisch eingestellt wie seinen Feinden. Die Ententen von 1904 und 1907 mochten die imperialen Rivalitten mit Frankreich und Russland gedmpft haben, aber sie hatten sie nicht aus der Welt geschafft. Dieses verbleibende Misstrauen hatte massgeblichen Einfluss auf die Gestaltung der britischen Kriegsziele whrend des Ersten Weltkrieges. Grossbritannien strebte eine Friedensregelung an, die einerseits Deutschland schwchen sollte, aber andererseits sicherstellen musste, dass weder Frankreichs noch Russlands Macht auf dem Kontinent ber Gebhr gestrkt wrden.
