Im Rahmen eines Projektes an der Forschungsstelle Vergleichende Stadtforschung der Universitt Harnburg in den Jahren 1986 bis 1988 zur Bedeutung der Zentren der Stadt Wolfsburg wurden die Bewohner zu den Wnschen gefragt, die sie an Stadtzentren haben. Neben der Mglichkeit, dort einzukaufen, wurde, noch vor Funktionen wie "sozialer Treffpunkt" oder "Darstellung des Ortsmittelpunktes" das kulturelle Angebot genannt: Kultur in der Stadt ist eine der wichtigsten Komponenten, die sie lebenswert fr die Bewohner macht und auch als "kultiviert" fr Auenstehende darstellt (Behn, Kirchberg und Friedrichs, 1989: 144). In einem anderen Projekt an dieser Forschungsstelle zu den Bedeutungen der Innenstdte von Harnburg und Baltimore in den U.S.A. (Friedrichs, Goodman et al., 1987: 2) wurde betont, da man die Zentralitt oder Bedeutung eines Ortes anhand dreier Dimensionen messen kann: Die konomische Bedeutungsdimension ist die Strke eines Ortes als Marktplatz fr Gter. Dienstleistungen und Informationen. Je hher an einem Platz der Anteil der Arbeitspltze, der Umstze und der Geschfts und Broflchen an der Summe dieser Indikatoren einer Region ist, desto wichtiger ist dieser Platz. Die soziale Bedeutungsdimension ist die soziokonomische Komposition der Benutzer eines Ortes, also seiner Bewohner, seiner Arbeitskrfte und seiner Besucher. Zur Messung dieser Dimension werden der Benutzer gewichtet anhand der Besuchshufigkeit der unterschiedlichen sozialen Gruppen.
