Cette approche onomasiologique, par la relation tablie entre les mots et les choses, considre et intgre davantage la langue nonlittraire jusquici quelque peu nglige. Le DAO est le premier dictionnaire qui tient compte de tous les idiomes du Midi de la France: en relevant la scripta occitane/gasconne, le latin mdival et le franais rgional, il reflte intgralement la situation linguistique plurilingue qui rgnait au Moyen ge dans le domaine occitan.
