El Mes de la Amistad entre las Islas Vrgenes y Puerto Rico es una institucin cultural que celebra cada ao las relaciones de amistad y hermandad forjadas por la historia y la geografa entre los autctonos cruceos y los descendientes puertorriqueos. La fuerte comunidad puertorriquea constituye el grupo minoritario ms importante en Santa Cruz, lo cual hace del espaol la segunda lengua ms hablada en la ms grande de las islas vrgenes estadounidenses despus del ingls, lengua oficial. Pero la necesidad de una promocin del espaol se justifica hoy por la prdida de su primera lengua por parte de las nuevas generaciones de hispanos ante la atraccin del ingls y la posibilidad que les ofrece de sentirse miembros del grupo mayoritario. En este estudio hemos intentado demostrar, a partir de lo que se viene haciendo desde aos y de cuanto se puede hacer en el futuro, cmo el Mes de la Amistad puede, a travs de su Comit de organizacin, ayudar y animar a los puertorriqueos a valorar el espaol como componente imprescindible de su identidad cultural, y a los cruceos autctonos a considerarlo como una lengua que no carece de importancia en el mundo actual.
