La carta del Preste Juan es un documento apcrifo ;aparecido en la segunda mitad del siglo XII y supuestamente escrito por el rey fabuloso de las Tres Indias; que fue enviado al Papa de Roma y a los emperadores de Bizancio y del Sacro Imperio Romano. Sus diferentes versiones en muy diversas lenguas, que iban a perdurar hasta el siglo XVI, coincidirn en hacer del Preste Juan no slo un monarca de tierras lejanas que encerraban maravillas sin cuento de carcter natural, sobrenatural y maravilloso, sino un sacerdote cristiano que, por haber hecho voto de reconquistar Jerusaln, pareca dispuesto a entablar relaciones con Occidente. La existencia del Preste Juan se convertir en un mito a lo largo de la Edad Media, cuya literatura, no slo de contenidos ficcionales sino de viajes, recogera los esfuerzos de los europeos por encontrar, primero en Asia y despus en frica, su fabuloso reino, de suerte que su figura, siempre situada entre la incierta frontera que separa realidad y leyenda, llegara a ser relacionada con la de Parzival, los Reyes Magos de Oriente, Ogier el Dans, el Emperador de Etiopa e, incluso, Alejandro Magno, siendo mencionada, entre muchos otros, por escritores tan dispares como Marco Polo, Jehan de Mandeville o Ariosto. La presente edicin recoge, por primera vez en castellano, la traduccin de las tres versiones ms antiguas de la Carta (latina, anglonormanda y antiguofrancesa).
