El Sistema de Cuentas Nacionales (SCN) elaborado por las Naciones Unidas en 1952 mediante el cual los pases tratan de medir los resultados de la actividad econmica en trminos de bienes producidos e ingresos generados, se basa en el esquema de contabilidad nacional de Richard Stone. En el mismo se registran las actividades de produccin, consumo y ahorro de los agentes econmicos. Las transacciones que los mismos realizan se incluyen en las cuentas segn su valor a precios de mercado. En los ltimos aos, desde la perspectiva ambiental, el SCN ha sido puesto en tela de juicio por diversas cuestiones. A los fines de este trabajo se consideran en primera instancia las que apuntan al paradigma cientfico subyacente, se analizan luego brevemente algunas cuestiones metodolgicas para, finalmente focalizar la atencin en las relacionadas con el mecanismo de valoracin de las transacciones, enfatizando la consideracin del denominado costo de mantenimiento (maintenance cost), uno de los mtodos de valoracin propuestos por Naciones Unidas en su Manual para la elaboracin de un Sistema Integrado de Cuentas Econmicas y Ambientales (SICEA).
