El libro analiza ciertos momentos en la historia de la cultura occidental que van poniendo de relieve el enraizamiento en la misma del derecho de libertad de conciencia. Ese enraizamiento hace ver la trascendencia de ese derecho para la educacin en los tiempos actuales de esa cultura. Recoge los antecedentes jurdicopolticos que han tenido lugar en Occidente y que desembocan en la Declaracin Universal de los Derechos Humanos. Destaca, a la vez, cmo esa dependencia cultural constituye una importante limitacin para la pretendida universalizacin de ese derecho. Por otra parte, establece unos principios antropolgicos en los que los autores apoyan el principio de relatividad cultural de los Derechos Humanos en general y de este derecho en particular. Ese principio hace imposible aplicar esos derechos a muchas otras culturas. Adems, completan su estudio con un apartado sobre la libertad de renuncia a ese mismo derecho, libertad que lo deja sin inters para quien opta por una determinada religin o ideologa.
