La expresin de la pasividad en el sudoeste de los Estados Unidos y Mxico (18551950) examina el desarrollo de los dialectos hispanos del sudoeste de los Estados Unidos en un intento por establecer su similitud y/o diferencia con el espaol hablado en Mxico. Utilizando como lente un fenmeno lingstico el uso de las expresiones pasivas este libro investiga la evolucin del espaol en los estados del sudoeste estadounidense (California, Nuevo Mxico y Texas) y los compara con el espaol usado en Mxico DF. Valindose del mtodo utilizado por la sociolingstica histrica, y con la ayuda del programa estadstico GoldVarbr 2001, la autora demuestra cmo los distintos eventos sociales, histricos y polticos ocurridos en cada una de las reas bajo estudio han dado como resultado una diferenciacin dialectal en el espaol hablado en esas zonas. A partir del examen de 3.951 instancias en un corpus de ms de cien mil palabras de distintos artculos periodsticos, el libro provee un minucioso anlisis del uso de la pasiva perifrstica y de la pasiva con se revelando cules son las restricciones lingsticas que subyacen al uso de cada variable en cada una de las reas estudiadas.
