Le 18 juillet 1936, une partie de l'arme espagnole se soulve pour renverser la IIe Rpublique, ne en 1931 et coupable, selon les gnraux flons, de conduire la rvolution. La guerre civile commence, mettant aux prises, d'un ct les dmocrates et les organisations ouvrires, de l'autre, les militaires rebelles conduits par Franco et les partis de droite et d'extrme droite soutenus par l'glise. L'Espagne voit s'affronter directement les trois grandes tendances politiques qui marqurent le dbut du sicle, les 'trois R' : rforme, rvolution et raction. En 1939, cette dernire l'emporte, installant une dictature qui durera jusqu'en 1975. La guerre d'Espagne, souvent considre comme la prfiguration de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, fut avant tout un conflit national, une guerre qui traversa les moindres villages, une vritable convulsion de toute la socit espagnole. Une des premires histoires de cet affrontement crucial des annes 1930 qui, loin des images d'pinal et du discours militant, nous fait pntrer au coeur des villages, des organisations et des institutions en guerre, et fait le point des recherches les plus rcentes.
