La explotacin del petrleo y gas natural tiene efectos ambientales especficos que dependen de la ubicacin de los yacimientos y de las tcnicas utilizadas para extraer los productos brutos. La prevencin y control de los impactos ambientales generados por las actividades de la industria petrolera es uno de los principales problemas que enfrenta la sociedad venezolana, por tanto, la existencia de un marco legal que regule dichas actividades a fin de minimizar el dao al ambiente se hace imprescindible. Este trabajo constituye un anlisis del marco ambiental legal vigente en Venezuela, en lo relativo a la industria petrolera, indicando las fortalezas y debilidades de la normativa con el fin de ampliar el conocimiento del Derecho Ambiental venezolano y contribuir con la inclusin de los aspectos ambientales en la toma de decisiones para el desarrollo econmicosocial en un contexto de manejo sustentable de los recursos energticos del pas y del mundo.
