En este libro se presentan una serie de ensayos que muestran a la literatura como fuente histrica. Los temas que se tratan, aunque de diferente carcter (heroico, cientfico, religioso, educativo, entre otros), convergen en que los textos literarios, en especial la poesa, son fuentes primarias con las que el autor construye su discurso historiogrfico. Martn Hurtado considera que la historia cultural (este tipo de investigacin est enmarcada en dicha corriente historiogrfica) es esencial para desmitificar a la historia como asunto de prohombres y grandes hazaas histricas. A final de cuentas, la historia no es asunto de un solo tema; en todo caso, se trata de la forma de vivir del ser humano en el tiempo, y la literatura es una forma espacial de estar en el tiempo.
