La vicenda e' ambientata in un paesino della Sardegna nella prima parte del '900. Il parroco si innamora di una donna importante del paese. L'amore e' corrisposto ma osteggiato dalla madre di lui. Il prete va in crisi e cerca di chiudere il proprio rapporto con la donna, che lo accusa di averla plagiata, e lo informa che dovra' andarsene dal paese se non vorra' che lei dica tutto a tutti i compaesani. La vicenda si sviluppa nella descrizione degli eventi che capitano al Prete e alla madre nei 2 giorni in cui il rapporto tra il prete e la sua amata si incrina drasticamente, fino alla tragica funzione religiosa della mattina del terzo giorno, durante la quale la madre temendo uno scandalo di fronte a tutti, muore di crepacuore sotto gli occhi atterriti del figlio e della sua amante.
