Parfaitement inform des avances des neurosciences, l'auteur sait qu'elles ne dissipent pas ce qu'on a put appeler le ' mystre de la conscience '. Les tats et les vnements mentaux sontils des tats et des vnements du cerveau ? Le cerveau fonctionnetil vraiment ' comme 'un ordinateur ? Une position matrialiste peutelle rendre compte des proprits qualitatives de l'exprience subjective ? Daniel Pinkas s'accorde s'accorde avec la plupart des spcialistes du domaine, chercheurs ou philosophes, pour refuser un dualisme strict entre matire et esprit. Il ne vise pas pour autant construire une thorie matrialiste rductionniste du mental, mais plutt analyser les difficults auxquelles un tel projet se heurte.
