El presente trabajo, que fue presentado en 2006 como tesis para obtener el grado de Licenciatura, explica el surgimiento de los tranvas elctricos en Mxico, a finales del siglo XIX, durante el gobierno de Porfirio Daz (18771910), cuando se logr impulsar la modernizacin econmica del pas, despus de largos aos de inestabilidad poltica y financiera, luego de consolidarse la Independencia. El texto, intenta ser ms que una simple monografa pues, adems de observar, de manera particular, cmo el tranva y el ferrocarril propiciaron la expansin urbana en la Ciudad de Mxico, sita el concepto de modernizacin tecnolgica y urbana en su contexto histrico a nivel mundial. Dicha obra, no slo, se sustenta en un vasto aparato crtico e ilustraciones, tambin, ofrece mapas y cuadros, elaborados por la propia autora.
