La plebe vil, hecha al circo y a los teatros (Tcito, Hist. 1.4.3). Durante dcadas la historia antigua ha profundizado en la investigacin de las estructuras sociales de la poca, avanzando notablemente en el anlisis de la esclavitud. Pero, como sucede con otros perodos, el conocimiento sobre las masas populares es escaso. Es un tema que ha tenido reducido inters entre la historiografa hasta fechas recientes y un problema histrico difcil de analizar debido al carcter de las fuentes disponibles. Como el fragmento de Tcito, estas fuentes, que son en general escasas, discontinuas y fragmentarias, citan a las masas mnima, subsidiaria y peyorativamente. Si se desea reconstruir esta historia de las masas en Roma se necesita una base terica, metodolgica y emprica; ms an teniendo en cuenta que es un tema escasamente tratado por la investigacin. Estos tres elementos han representado los objetivos del presente volumen, aproximando el problema de la historia de la plebe romana a la historiografa antigua y a la de otros perodos.
