About the Author Augusto Monterroso (guatemalteco, nacido en 1921) vivi exiliado en Mxico desde 1944. Incorporado de lleno a la vida cultural de este pas, en l escribi toda su obra literaria. En 1975 recibi el premio Xavier Villaurrutia y en 1988, la condecoracin del guila Azteca. Los libros de narrativa y ensayo que le han dado un lugar sobresaliente dentro de la literatura en lengua hispana son: Obras completas (y otros cuentos) (1959), La Oveja negra y dems fbulas (Alfaguara, 1998), Movimiento perpetuo (Alfaguara, 1999), Lo dems es silencio (1978), La palabra mgica (1983), La letra e (Alfaguara, 1998), Los buscadores de oro (Alfaguara, 1993), Cuentos, fbulas y lo dems es silencio (Alfaguara, 1996), Pjaros de Hispanoamrica (Alfaguara, 2002) y, en colaboracin con Brbara Jacobs, Antologa del cuento triste (Alfaguara, 1997). En 1993 fue nombrado miembro de la Academia Guatemalteca de la Lengua Espaola, y en 1996, doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, adems de miembro de la Orden Miguel ngel Asturias y premio Nacional de Literatura en 1997, en Guatemala. Ese mismo ao recibi el premio de Literatura Latinoamericana y del Caribe Juan Rulfo. En 2000 recibi el Premio Prncipe de Asturias de las Letras. Falleci en 2003 en la Ciudad de Mxico.
