Car, avec l'historia, Alberti dfinit un ordre pictural qui est aussi un ordre de la pense et du savoir : la Reprsentation, dont le primat allait durer plusieurs sicles. Cette nouveaut conceptuelle est indissociable de l'invention d'un nouveau langage. Aussi la prsente traduction suitelle au plus prs le texte latin, prsent en regard ; elle s'accompagne de la version italienne donne par Alberti luimme en 1436, de nombreuses notes, d'une introduction et d'un riche dossier, o le lecteur trouvera notamment un glossaire thorique ainsi que le texte (indit en France) des lments de peinture.
