La peperina es una especie aromtica nativa que crece en zonas serranas y precordilleranas de Los Andes. En la zona serrana del centro de Argentina es muy demandada, pero su consumo es extractivo, ponindola en peligro de extincin. Considerando la variabilidad existente en poblaciones locales y a partir del ajuste de tcnicas de manejo, es posible efectuar el cultivo de la especie y la seleccin de genotipos superiores. Se plante caracterizar poblaciones locales tanto en su hbitat natural como bajo condiciones de cultivo, estableciendo criterios para posibilitar su manejo cultural y el mejoramiento gentico. Se avanz en su domesticacin a fin de protegerla y posibilitar un uso racional del recurso natural. Se presentan a continuacin resultados de multiplicacin, anlisis citogentico, evaluaciones de la variabilidad morfolgica y de sus aceites esenciales tanto in situ y como ex situ, como as tambin la determinacin de parmetros genticos para que identifiquen los caracteres en las condiciones de estudio. Por seleccin se identificaron clones con respuestas diferenciales en distintos ambientes y condiciones de manejo cultural.
