Adolescent, dans un livre qui est l'un des grands de notre temps, Nadja, d'Andr Breton, une phrase m'avait frapp : Breton lui faisait dire que la beaut absolue est indescriptible. A partir de l, au lieu de dcrire des merveilles, il les reproduisait en photo. J'avais alors ressenti un malaise sans aller plus loin. Ce malaise a perdur en moi et, au fil des ans, je me disais : comment peuton douter de son instrument, la langue ? Dans la Pierre et le Saguaro, j'ai voulu donner voir (expression et titre d'Eluard) la beaut absolue, pour moi (et pour tant d'autres), le dsert amricain. Celui du SudOuest, riche de deux lments emblmatiques, l'un la pierre, dont les hauts lieux sont Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon et ce Monument Valley que j'ai vu quatorze fois : chaque fois, en le dcouvrant et le redcouvrant, je suis tomb genoux... L'autre, le saguaro, dit aussi cactuscandlabre, gant incroyable d'allure, de force, de splendeur, l'arbreroi du dsert de Sonora.' (Y.B.) La Pierre et le Saguaro : travers ces deux symboles, Yves Berger a crit un livre comme tiss d'images. Roman minral, cantique vgtal, tout, ici, clbre le descriptible bonheur de voir et de se perdre sur un territoire qui est, jamais, celui des songes et de la littrature.
