Las transformaciones sociales que se han dado entre los siglos XIX y XX han propiciado la aparicin de diversas herramientas analticas que pudieran dar cuenta de las distintas situaciones de pobreza. En este marco se fue configurando un espacio controversial (Nudler, 2009) cuya estructura y dinmica se analiza en este trabajo a partir de la identificacin de elementos de ruptura y continuidad existentes entre las distintas categoras con las cuales desde las ciencias sociales se ha tratado de conocer o describir el fenmeno. En este contexto, es posible advertir que desde su conformacin el espacio controversial de los estudios sobre la pobreza ha experimentado dos tipos de procesos de cambio conceptual, terico y/o metodolgico; uno, basado en la ampliacin de las dimensiones constitutivas de los conceptos definidos como claves para analizar la pobreza y otro basado en la redefinicin de la pobreza en tanto problema a partir de la emergencia del concepto de capacidades de Amartya Sen.
