Despus del trgico terremoto del 16 de agosto de 1906 en Valparaso, Chile, se supo que el sismo haba sido pronosticado 10 das antes por el Capitn de Corbeta Arturo Middleton Cruz, Jefe de la Seccin de Meteorologa de la Armada de Chile, quien trabajaba con una teora astrolgica posteriormente llamada Solectrics, del marino ingls Alfred Jopling Cooper. Despus de ms de 100 aos, cuando an los sismos no pueden anticiparse, la leyenda de Middleton sigue siendo contada por los historiadores y la prensa sin ninguna reflexin. En este trabajo el autor no slo rescata detalles fundamentales que se publicaron entre 1901 y 1917 y que cambian totalmente la actual interpretacin del pronstico, sino que adems especula sobre cul pudo haber sido la historia de Cooper y de su teora. El trabajo desmitifica el pronstico y los supuestos aciertos de Cooper, muestra que Middleton no trabaj solo y revela el triste final de su historia. Siempre mirando los hechos desde el punto de vista de la ciencia, el autor observa cmo las omisiones y errores que se propagan de artculo en artculo, tergiversan y ocultan la historia en favor de los nuevos profetas que siguen y seguirn apareciendo.
