Chargs d'un enfant qui vient de natre dans ce cimetire, ils entreprennent la traverse du Maroc, du nord au sud, et vont, comme en plerinage, de ville en village, d'histoire en histoire, vers la tombe de Chekh MaalAynayn, hros de la rsistance marocaine (18301910) qui est aussi le marabout de leur mmoire. Pour chacun, il n'y a pas d'issue ; il n'y a pas non plus d'impasse, mais l'itinraire inlassable l'intrieur du pays et d'euxmmes. L'auteur, lui aussi, cultiv la fois la fragilit et la passion du souvenir, et le rcit s'inscrit, l'image de l'histoire, comme un livre gar que Tahar Ben Jelloun restitue au fil des pages.
