L'autore riesce a dare in poche pagine un mirabile schizzo sociologico della provincia carinziana, e a delineare in poche frasi alcuni degli avvenimenti pi importanti che segnano il quadro storico dell'Austria del 1900. Handke sceglie il "caso" della propria madre e riconduce l'esistenza della donna alle condizioni della socializzazione in un ambiente piccoloborghese e cattolico. Il trasferimento del privato nella sfera pubblica, ovvero la generalizzazione di una storia personale, avviene a livello linguistico in maniera esemplare. il linguaggio, in Wunschloses Unglck, che rende chiaro il rapporto fra strutture sociali e strutture individuali. La vita della madre viene caratterizzata attraverso ogni elemento linguistico. Il collegamento fra le due "storie" avviene in maniera alquanto implicita. Il linguaggio offre dei nessi causali, ed il lettore che viene chiamato ad interpretare i legami che uniscono le vicende.
