Kurt, le personnage principal du roman, s'apprte interprter ce clbre morceau lors d'une tourne de concerts et, puisqu'il s'agit d'un quatuor, trois autres personnages vont, avec lui, traverser le paysage. Il y a Barbara Peterson, une artiste amricaine d'avantgarde ; Stanislas Skoliniski, un journaliste franais d'origine polonaise ; Mireille Jourdan, une paysanne provenale. Logiquement, ces personnages n'auraient pas d rencontrer le chef d'orchestre Kurt Lewenstein et pourtant, entre eux, va se nouer une histoire trange pleine de malentendus, de passion et de drames. Une histoire o il est question, entre autres, de l'Autriche de l'immdiat aprsguerre et de son atmosphre trouble, du conflit entre le libertinage et l'amourpassion, d'une dcouverte de l'art baroque travers la Bavire, de New York et de l'effervescence cratrice qui y rgnait dans les annes 70, de la guerre du Liban, des grands romanciers viennois du dbut de ce sicle et de leurs destins tragiques, d'un paysage de Provence indiffrent la folie des hommes... On aura compris que la trame de ce roman ne se laisse pas aisment rsumer.
