La televisin pblica de mbito estatal en Espaa experiment una profunda transformacin organizativa, legal, funcional y econmica desde el inicio de la VIII legislatura. El objetivo de ese cambio resida en transformar un servicio pblico que se encontraba deslegitimado y quebrado econmicamente en el motor del sector audiovisual, en una televisin que liderase la transicin a la Televisin Digital Terrestre (TDT), una televisin, en definitiva, valorada por su rentabilidad social y por su eficiencia en la prestacin del servicio pblico encomendado. El presente trabajo pretende profundizar y explicar los motivos de la transformacin de RTVE, empleando para ello el anlisis de abundante documentacin que permite conocer la ntima relacin y protagonismo que durante el proceso de reestructuracin del antiguo Ente Pblico tuvo la Comisin Europea a travs de su cuerpo legislativo, y su colaboracin con el Gobierno de Espaa.
