Dentro del rea de anlisis de seales, la transformada de Fourier ha sido de gran aplicacin en estudios de aquellas de caracter elctrico, sin embargo, en el momento de trabajar con seales no peridicas y transitorias obtenidas en los Sistemas Elctricos de Potencia se han presentado diferentes inconvenientes debido a la pobre resolucin tiempofrecuencial que entrega. En otras palabras, esta transformada brinda informacin de la seal en el dominio de la frecuencia mas no el tiempo exacto en el cual aparece determinada frecuencia. En vista a estos problemas, recientes estudios han demostrado que la transformada conocida como Transformada Wavelet resuelve estos inconvenientes tiempofrecuenciales permitiendo obtener una muy buena resolucin en el tiempo y baja resolucin en la frecuencia para frecuencias altas y baja resolucin en el tiempo y buena resolucin en frecuencia para frecuencias bajas. En este documento se tocan aspectos bsicos de la Transformada Wavelet introduciendonos a ella desde la transformada de Fourier, as como un compendio de aplicaciones en las que ha sido til para estudios de fenmenos presentados en Sistemas Elctricos de Potencia.
