La magnitud de las fluctuaciones trmicas representa una variable ambiental altamente influyente en la dinmica de los ecosistemas dentro de las zonas urbanas. La cobertura vegetal en las ciudades es fundamental en la regulacin trmica debida principalmente a la interaccin entre el contenido de agua de los tejidos vegetales y el medio ambiente circundante. Existen diversos mtodos, pero la alta resolucin espacial de los sensores remotos los constituye actualmente en una herramienta altamente eficaz en el estudio del comportamiento de las temperaturas de superficie. El objetivo principal de esta investigacin fue analizar la relacin entre la cubierta de vegetacin y las temperaturas de superficie dentro de seis ciudades del centrosur de Chile. Para ello se utiliz el NDVI (ndice de Diferencia Normalizada de Vegetacin) y su relacin con el LSTda y LSTnoche (Temperatura de Superficie) obtenido de la plataforma Terra/MODIS. Para el anlisis e interpretacin de la informacin disponible, se emplearon series de tiempo desde el ao 2001 hasta 2006.
