Elle tait un peu chre. Elle ne l'avait pas quitt depuis. Mais mes mains taient sans doute un peu faibles, ou moimme un peu assoupie, car j'ai senti glisser quelque chose, un bruit lger, fatal, irrparable. J'tais bouleverse d'avoir ainsi dtruit jamais cet objet qui avait tant compt pour nous, cette plaque de minral au dessin parfait peu prs aussi antique que la terre. D'ou taitelle venue pour nous attendre deux ans chez un bijoutier hindou, pour passer et repasser l'ocan aux mains d'un ami qui n'a peuttre plus longtemps vivre ? De quel Himalaya, de quel Pamir ? Mais le son mme de sa fin a t beau... Oui, me ditil, la voix des choses. Je voudrais retourner en Inde pour retrouver pour lui une autre plaque aussi belle que cellel. Mais j'ai dcid d'appel ce petit livre o rien peu prs n'est de moi, sauf quelques traductions mais qui m'a servi de livre de chevet et de livre de voyage pendant tant d'annes, La voix des choses."
