Violent aesthetic debates enlivened the ?Pompadour generation?, which was also the generation ago the authors of the Encyclopedia. At the same time, powerful figures such as Fragonard, Boucher, Chardin and Greuze developed personal styles of painting situated between eroticism and naturalism.
