C'est ainsi que Douceline est recueillie par le forgeron Arthme, son pouse Mlinotte et leur drle de niche : quatre garons des plus turbulents sauvs de la rue et de la briganderie. Il leur manquait une fille. Douceline, rendue amnsique par sa terrible chute, a enfin trouv une famille. Pour aider Arthme, malade, elle s'initie aux mille et un tours du mtier de forgeron. Dans l'atelier passent des personnages pittoresques : le chanoine Guillaume ; Amable, le sonneur de cloches ; Charles, le peintre sur verre ; Abkar, le magicien. Lentement, Douceline rapprend vivre et aimer.
