Il s'agit en fait, comme toujours chez Victor Hugo, d'une somme qui se dveloppe infiniment, et dborde sans cesse le cadre initial. Si le grandpre Hugo parle bien ses petitsenfants et se rapproprie en leur nom le territoire de l'enfance (y compris l'apprentissage de la langue, les refrains et les chansons), l'uvre ne ressemble en rien une suite d'enfantillages. Et c'est sans doute le message principal de ce recueil : la posie destine aux enfants se doit d'tre de la posie pour tous, avec sa part d'obscurit, son emportement, voire son rudition.
