Sirvindose con maestra del gnero epistolar, en ella Pierre CHODERLOS DE LACLOS (17411803) relata una historia de perversin, celos y sentimientos encontrados en la que sobresalen los amorales personajes del vizconde de Valmont y la marquesa de Merteuil, quienes utilizan la pulsin amorosa como medio de manipulacin del prjimo y satisfaccin de su amor propio. El trgico final de los protagonistas no lleva aparejado, contra lo que pudiera parecer, un carcter moralizante en la obra, cuya perfeccin estructural y deslumbrante sutileza a la hora de cincelar los personajes la erigen en precursora indiscutible de la gran narrativa francesa del siglo xix.
