Nacido en el seno del teatro, durante una gira por Amrica de la compaa Mara Guerrero y Fernando Daz de Mendoza (1921), Fernando FernnGmez fue educado en Madrid, en el barrio de Chamber, escenario y microcosmos de la guerra civil espaola en su obra LAS BICICLETAS SON PARA EL VERANO. Su vocacin infantil fue doble: la interpretacin y la escritura, pero si pblicamente se inclin por la carrera de actor, nunca dej de escribir y, desde luego, de leer. A la consagracin popular que ya tena como actor se une el prestigio de un gran escritor, miembro de la Real Academia Espaola. Los primeros poemas y narraciones breves dieron despus paso al teatro: su drama La coartada tuvo un accsit en el Premio Lope de Vega, que luego ganara con LAS BICICLETAS SON PARA EL VERANO (1984), considerada como su obra maestra. Nuestra edicin, precedida de una introduccin de Eduardo Haro Tecglen, en donde estudia la produccin y la vida de Fernando FernnGmez, se completa con un apndice documental y propuestas de lectura de la obra, una de las ms importantes de la literatura dramtica espaola.
