La investigacin presenta los cambios demogrficos, epidemiolgicos y de salud pblica de la provincia de Tarragona (Espaa) durante el siglo XX y hasta el 2010. Una tendencia descendente donde las enfermedades infecciosas de los nios que abundan a principios de siglo XX son sustituidas por enfermedades circulatorias, cncer y respiratorias en edades adultas, hacia 1950. Es entonces, cuando aparece el concepto de salud y mortalidad diferenciada, donde las mujeres adquieren protagonismo. A finales de siglo XX la mortalidad se centra en edades ancianas, especialmente femenina. Son ellas, las que tienen mayor esperanza de vida y rompen los patrones epidemiolgicos existentes. En el siglo XXI, la mortalidad de la mujer viene acompaada por enfermedades del sistema nervioso y trastornos mentales en edades muy avanzadas, nveles en la epidemiologa y en la salud actual.
