Debido, segn datos obtenidos de algunas fuentes, por sus habilidades como productores y comerciantes de artesanas, conocidos desde la poca de la colonia como los "mindalaes". Los indgenas de Otavalo han logrado sobresalir del resto de los pueblos indgenas en el Ecuador. Un cantn con una dinmica econmica y donde la cadena de intermediarios marca tambin una diferencia de clases econmicasocial entre indgenas, afectando a los pequeos productores y excluyndolos de este desarrollo econmico local.
