Le 2 mars 1127, mercredi des Cendres, le pieux et bon comte de Flandre Charles est agenouill en prires dans l'glise Saint Donatien de Bruges, lieu sacr. Un commando fait irruption et, parderrire, le poignarde. Les auteurs et commanditaires de ce crime monstrueux appartiennent au proche entourage du comte Charles, dont ils craignaient d'avoir encouru la disgrce et qu'ils cherchaient remplacer par un seigneur concurrent. S'ensuivent, Bruges et dans toute la Flandre, des pripties d'une extrme violence, avant que le roi Louis VI le Gros, dont le comte de Flandre est un puissant et fidle vassal, fasse bonne justice et impose son propre candidat la couronne comtale. Un tmoin, Galbert de Bruges, a tout racont dans un prodigieux rcit. Cet pisode, qui eut un immense retentissement, permet de mettre en lumire les moeurs et les rites de la chevalerie, l'mergence politique d'une bourgeoisie consciente de sa puissance et de ses droits, l'exercice de l'autorit royale, le poids de la religion, le meurtre du comte Charles ayant fait de lui, aux yeux de ses sujets, un martyr.
