Beide reflektieren dasselbe historische Ereignis, den CanudosKrieg im Nordosten Brasiliens (1897, Kap. 1), differieren aber in ihrer Gattung. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die beiden Werke im Hinblick auf die unterschiedliche Gewichtung von Historiographie und Fiktion zu untersuchen. Kap. 2 diskutiert die Frage nach der Gattung der Werke, um die unterschiedliche Aufbereitung der historischen Fakten herauszuarbeiten. Os sertes vermischt wissenschaftlichen, historiographischen und literarischen Diskurs. La guerra... hingegen ordnet sich in die Subgattung des historischen Romans bzw. der nueva novela histrica" ein. Kap. 3 untersucht die ideologischen und literaturtheoretischen Prmissen, denen die Werke verpflichtet sind. Da Cunha orientiert sich wissenschaftlich am Positivismus und Sozialdarwinismus. Vargas Llosa dagegen bezeichnet in seiner Romantheorie den Schriftsteller als Gottesmrder", der fortwhrend gegen die Wirklichkeit rebellier[t]" und der den Wahrheitsgehalt" des Dargestellten nicht wie Da Cunha an seiner Nhe zur Realitt", sondern am Gelingen der literarischen Persuasionsstrategien" misst. Kap. 4 beschftigt sich mit darstellungssthetischen Aspekten, wobei der Erzhlsituation und der Sprache in beiden Werken besondere Aufmerksamkeit zukommt. Kap. 5 befasst sich mit der Funktion der Personenkonstellation und der Charakterisierung einzelner Figuren, wodurch die ideologische Positionierung von Os sertes (als Hypotext) und La guerra...
