Le Bar de l'Escadrille est le roman d'un mtier et d'un homme. L'homme, Jos Fornerod, est diteur. Il est entr 'dans le papier' comme on joue, comme on se bat, comme on rve. Il y a trouv la magie brlante et les chiffres glacs, l'amiti et les rivalits, les petits miracles, les grands checs, et bientt les tentations qui dcoulent de la passion des livres : presse, cinma, tlvision. Il lui semble exercer 'le plus beau mtier du monde', en tout cas le plus dvorant, qui roule vie prive, amours, secrets, dans l'unique torrent de la vie professionnelle. Si l'action du roman se droule sur deux annes, c'est toute la vie de Fornerod qui est voque, des dbuts dans un taudis de la rue de la Harpe ses trente ans de combats, de ftes, d'amertumes. Chaque personnage prend la parole son tour et raconte un pisode tel qu'il l'a vcu cent personnages, au premier rang desquels Jos, sa femme Claude, et une de 'ses' romancires, Elisabeth, qui trane tous les coeurs aprs soi. Le rcit procde par grandes scnes : le tournage d'un film, un enterrement, un complot financier, des monstres sacrs au repos, une tragdie en montagne. Il y est aussi beaucoup question de l'amour d'un homme pour son pouse...
