Ce volume en offre la premire dition critique, d'aprs un excellent manuscrit du XVe sicle, et la premire traduction en franais moderne.Alain Chartier (c. 13851430) est peuttre l'auteur franais le plus lu tout au long du XVe sicle (presque 200 manuscrits ont transmis un ou plusieurs de ses ouvrages), mais depuis la Renaissance sa fortune s'est clipse au profit de celui qui sera le ' pote maudit ' de la gnration suivante, Franois Villon. Pourtant, son pome le plus connu, La Belle Dame sans Mercy, fit scandale et suscita de vives ractions sous forme de continuations et d'imitations, une vingtaine au total. Dans le pome initial, sorte de dialogue amoureux, la Belle Dame du titre oppose des refus subtils aux arguments de son prtendant, au point que celuici finit par mourir de chagrin. Les premiers lecteurs protestrent contre cette image fminine si nfaste pour l'idal de l'amour courtois ; dans les continuations fictives, la Belle Dame est accuse de meurtre devant le tribunal du Dieu d'Amour et finit par tre condamne.
