Ce livre est l'histoire d'un geste commun ces 'hommes infmes' (Michel foucault) et l'crivain parmi eux : lutte contre la honte d'tre rduit au silence, volont de procs, heurt des fables potiques avec les fictions politiques. Dans cette perspective, le 'dernier Genet' dsigne celui de la fin, de la dernire priode, o l'homme a tent une sortie politique par le seul moyen du pote, la langue. Mais 'dernier' signifie aussi le pire, comme on parle du dernier des hommes, si les devenirs Noir ou Palestinien de Genet n'excluent pas la guerre, l'appel au meurtre, voire la haine de l'ennemi. En Autriche, en 1983, Genet dit : 'Quand j'ai termin l'criture, j'avais trentequatre ou trentecinq ans, mais c'tait du rve. J'avais crit en prison. Une fois libre, j'tais perdu. Et je ne me suis retrouv rellement, et dans le monde rel, qu'avec ces deux mouvements rvolutionnaires, les Panthres et les Palestiniens. Et alors je me soumettais au monde rel. J'agissais en fonction du monde rel et plus en fonction du monde grammatical...'
