La deuxime partie, consacre au thme de la paternit divine, est sans doute la plus importante de l'ouvrage. Jsus n'a pas innov en dsignant Dieu comme le Pre, mais il privilgie dlibrment le nom du Pre et, pour lui, la paternit se manifeste moins dans l'autorit que dans la radicale bont. La manire simple et directe de parler de Dieu qui caractrise Jsus culmine dans l'emploi de " Abba ", terme qui traduit l'tonnante proximit du Dieu de Jsus. L'tude dtaille du prcepte de l'amour des ennemis et de la parabole des ouvriers de la vigne, objet de la troisime partie, fait ressortir que Jsus a mis dlibrment en relief le paradoxe de l'amour privilgi de Dieu pour ceux qui ont le plus besoin de lui et qui, selon les normes reues, en sont le plus loin. Jsus se fait ainsi le prophte d'un Dieu diffrent, qui djoue les attentes et dconcerte.
