Son pre, italien d'origine, tait cordonnier, sa mre, repasseuse. Aprs des tudes secondaires au collge de sa ville natale, il devient employ de banque jusqu' la guerre de 1914, qu'il traverse comme simple soldat. En 1919, il retourne la banque. En 1920, il pouse une amie d'enfance, lise. Ils auront deux filles, Aline et Sylvie. Lorsqu'en 1930 la banque qui l'emploie ferme sa succursale de Manosque et lui offre une situation ailleurs, il choisit de rester dans sa ville, et de quitter tout fait la banque pour la littrature. Il fut aussi historien et scnariste. Dans l'oeuvre de Giono, la nature tient une grande place. Il a toujours aim les arbres. Quand il tait petit, il allait se promener en compagnie de son pre. Tous deux emportaient dans leurs poches des glands qu'ils plantaient dans la terre l'aide de leur canne, en esprant qu'ils deviendraient de superbes chnes.Jean Giono est mort le 9 octobre 1970.
