De nombreux lves se pressent dans son atelier, les commandes affluent... ct de commandes officielles pour les monuments franais (la Mission hliographique, 1851) puis pour l'empereur Napolon III (le camp de ChlonssurMarne, 1857), Le Gray labore une oeuvre personnelle, en fort de Fontainebleau, en bord de mer, de Cherbourg Ste, au coeur de Paris : autant de sries dont l'exigence artistique qui aujourd'hui s'impose tous marginalise ce photographe trop peu "commercial" pour son temps...Fuyant ses cranciers, Le Gray quitte Paris en mai 1860 pour une croisire en Orient bord de l'Emma, la golette d'Alexandre Dumas. Aprs une escale improvise Palerme o, en pleine insurrection garibaldienne, il immortalise hros, ruines et barricades, il gagne la Syrie puis l'gypte. Celui en qui Dumas voyait "le premier photographe de Paris" ne devait jamais regagner la capitale, inventant d'Alexandrie au Caire une vision quasi instantane d'une extraordinaire libert.
