Ein Thema, das zuvor niemals vorkam, nmlich das Leben eines brgerlichen Helden, wird durch Stendhal etabliert. Der kleine Mann", dessen Dasein von Arbeit und somit vom Gelderwerb geprgt ist, gewinnt an Bedeutung. Die Wirklichkeit, die in das Leben der Menschen hineindringt und die Hindernisse, die den Plan des Protagonisten oftmals durchkreuzen, werden dargestellt. Der Roman soll zum Spiegel der Realitt werden. Doch wie zeigt sich diese Prmisse in Le Rouge et le Noir? Stendhal schreibt diesen Roman in einem bergangsstadium von der Romantik zum Realismus, den er selbst noch nicht einmal so genannt hat. Er selbst wei, dass er die Anforderung an den Roman, die Gesellschaft zu spiegeln, so wie sie ist, nicht immer erfllt. Julien Sorel ist der Prototyp des Aufsteigers aus dem Proletariat, wie er typisch fr die Epoche ist. Doch gleichzeitig findet man in ihm auch etwas Allgemeingltiges, etwas, das ber die simple Figur hinausragt. Er ist ein Ausnahmemensch, der nicht einmal im Angesicht des Todes eine triviale Lsung sucht. Mathilde de La Mole bildet Juliens weibliches Pendant, was gerade die Beziehung der beiden zueinander so interessant macht. Auch sie drfte es in der Zeit der Restauration streng genommen nicht geben. Die Seelengre und Leidenschaften, die diese beiden Protagonisten auszeichnen, passen nicht in diese Zeit. Stendhal schreibt einerseits realistisch, andrerseits berhht er Sachverhalte, um einen greren Effekt zu erzeugen, was vor allem bei Mathilde und Julien klar wird.
