Moqu par ses lves, vivant comme une gothon, sachant qu'une rvolution se lve l'Est, trop tard pour lui, ha par tous les patriotes de l'arrire, il veut se battre en duel, dans un dernier sursaut. Et, comme on le prive de ce duel et de son honneur, il ne lui reste plus que le suicide.Bien que retentissant des problmes de 1917, Le Sang noir est un roman mtaphysique, plus que politique. Cette dimension mtaphysique et le foisonnement des personnages font du Sang noir le roman le plus dostoevskien de la littrature franaise.
