Le roman, prsent la fois comme une enqute littraire au coeur de l'URSS stalinienne et une biographie extraordinairement ingnieuse, permet de reconstituer la vie de l'auteur de La Cerisaie et d'Oncle Vania. Toutes les figures de la littrature russe, de la vie thtrale, de l'entourage familial de Tchekhov resurgissent sous le regard de l'enqutrice imaginaire et surtout sous la plume d'une des plus grandes spcialistes de la littrature russe. D'origine russe, elle a publi sa thse sur Les Nihilistes russes (Anthropos, 1979) et depuis une vingtaine d'annes a crit de nombreuses biographies : Eugnie de Gurin ou une chastet ardente (Albin Michel, 1982), Edmond et Jules de Goncourt ou le gnie androgyne (Persona, 1984), L'trange Baronne Von Mekk (Perrin, 1988), Meyerhold, un saltimbanque de gnie (La Diffrence, 1996)
