Ce dbat relve de trois questions sousjacentes l'intervention de l'Eglise en matire sociale: une question apologtique, critique et pistmologique. Ces trois questions manifestent la nouveaut de l'approche de cette encyclique sociale, le projet social qu'elle propose mais galement le paradoxe de ses solutions. Les changements survenus dans cet enseignement mettent en relief la question de son statut pistmologique en rapport l'exigence scientifique: cet enseignement est cens fournir des justifications de ses affirmations sur la justesse de ses normes, sur le rapport du discours la vrit et la manire dont il assure le contrle de son dveloppement. De telles justifications sont concomitantes de l'effort de dfinir l'objet, la mthode et la vise de la morale sociale chrtienne.
