This study of the New York Hasidim was originally published in 1968 by the University of Chicago. The author, a professor of anthropology and Jewish Studies, explores the relaitonship of the community to its legends and examines the legends for their cultural content.

I was really looking forward to this book, but it felt a bit scattered. Some stories were engaging, but others just didn’t resonate with me. Plus, the formatting was kind of off. Not what I hoped for.

Great for Beginners
If you're new to Hasidic culture, this book serves as a great introduction! I bought it for my son who’s been asking about Jewish traditions. He loved the stories but wanted more visuals. Still, a solid read!

Informative but Lacked Depth
While I found 'Legends of the Hasidim' informative, I expected more depth on certain traditions. It's a good starting point, but I hope for a sequel that dives deeper into the stories. Worth a read, though!

A Deep Dive into Hasidic Culture
This book is a fascinating introduction to Hasidic culture! The oral traditions captured in the new world are so rich and beautifully explained. I borrowed it from the library, but I’m definitely buying my own copy for deeper study.
